Hello Rob, My husband and I just finished watching the Bears/Seahawks game which I am guessing you also watched. It was a terrific game with sudden death tie. I was so impressed with Rex Grossman I googled him which is how I learned about you. I had been telling my husband throughout the game how I would be going nuts if any of our three boys (all grown, ages 36,34,and 30)played because the game is so darn rough. They played a little in school but didn't have the discipline for grueling workouts. I am so very sorry for your horrible accident and can hardly imagine what it must be like for you. My mother was shot and paralyzed from the waist down at age 44. She handled it well for the most part but as I am sure it is with you, your moods are very fluid with being up one day, down the next.
I was pleased to see you vacationed in Hawaii and sure hope that you thoroughly enjoyed yourself. My husband retired from the Navy as a Captain and we had several tours of duty there. We also lived in the Philippines and Okinawa, Japan. It was very exciting to be able to travel the world but the boys still complain about having to change schools all the time. My husband was E.O.D. which in case you don't know, stands for Explosive Ordnance Disposal so he dismantles bombs. He retired about 3 1/2 yrs. ago and is now working for a company doing pretty much the same thing. He was asked to go to Iraq but fortunately other's wanted to go and he was not needed.
I like to write and go for nice walks along the boardwalk at the Oceanfront. Today it was 77 degrees and I would have to say a perfect "10"!! The sky was blue, sun shining brightly and reflecting off the waves like sparkling diamonds. There were hundreds of people and everyone was in a good mood. I heard children's laughter, saw kids playing in the sand, adults strolling arm and arm and people biking and rollerblading. It was a good day to be alive. I like it when I feel this kind of mood to counter the days I may go the other way and recall ways I could have been a better mother or daughter, etc., etc. I think it is just part of the "human condition" to chastise ourselves for not being perfect (as if anyone is!)
Hey, when you were in Hawaii did you happen to hear any songs by my all time favorite singer/entertainer Israel Kamakawewo'ole? He has the voice of an angel. He is a tenor which has a way of reaching your heart with very little effort. You may have heard of Israel, fondly called "IZ" by his followers. He died in 1997 at age 38 of morbid obesity. The poor guy weighted between 750 and 1000 lbs. according to his doctor. The last year of his life he spent mostly in the hospital. He was also able to travel to Las Vegas and San Fran. for concerts with special seating on a plane and crane to get on to the stage. He did it with pride and humor. He was married to a lovely wife and has a 1 yr. old daughter. IZ was 100% Hawaiian having been born on Hiihau where only Full blooded Hawaiians are able to live. The reason I an sharing all of this IZ stuff with you is because I think you may enjoy his music. I share it with everyone I care about. I gave a CD to my Doctor yesterday. If you have seen 50 First Dates, Finding Forrester or Meet Joe Black you have most likely heard his music. His hottest recording at this time is "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" which he sings with the most beautiful and soothing voice on the planet and accompanies himself with the ukulele. Some songs he has his band backing him. I would be most happy to sent you a coupe of these CD's if you think you might be interested. Or if you have a DVD you might prefer that because he talks and sings and you get to meet his family. I saw this great man one time in Honolulu and nearly fell over when I saw how big he was since I have never seen anyone even close to this size. A Sumo Wrestler might be half IZ's size. IZ lost about 150 lbs. by working out in the swimming pool. He said that is the time he felt free. It is hard to understand why such bad things happed to good people. I don't think there is any rationatity behind it. I think a lot of things just happen because life is complicated and people are busy and what kind of life would we lead if we sat home and didn't get involved in life? We may be safer but our minds and bodies would athrophy.
I like to surround myself with people I truly enjoy (no Phonies) and listed to music that brings me up, not down; and watch movies that are heartlifting.
Do me a favor, Rob. Why don't you let me know what you think I can do to make your life a little more fun. Since we live pretty far away, Bridge and Poker and Scrabble may be out. Maybe we can come up with some other game? We coud have a book club. Do you listed to books on tape? Have you ever read/listed to, A Confederacy of Dunces? It is such a hoot. What do you like to read? By the way, I am going to be 60 in April in case you are curious. If you would like to communicate and have any questions for me, send them my way. I am a very open person, very non judgement, quite liberal, think people are basically good.
Okay Rob, it's 12:20 AM for me and I must head for bed since I have aerobics at 8:30. I hope you have a restful sleep. Say hello to you wonderful mother for me.

Hello Rob-
My son was paralyzed from the neck down at the age of 28 from an auto accident. He also played football and suffered dislocations in both shoulders.
I have experienced firs-hand what a family goes through when a loved-one is tragically injured. My thoughts are with your family as with you.
My family followed Chirstoper Reeve from the moment my son sustained the injury, and we still do support the Reeve foundation. There is a wonderful book in audio form that Christopher Reeve wrote entitled 'Still Me'. If you haven't already read or heard the audio of this book, I highly recommend that you and your family do so. One of the many wonderful messages in that book was this: That You Are Still You.
I hope you are able to continue to forge ahead with what your life has in store for you. And if you do, always remember that you will be an inspiration to many.
Sincerely,
Janet Schroeder

Rob, I am a Rolling Meadows graduate myself! I am sorry to hear what occurred! I want you to know my prayers tonight will be for you and that in the next election I will be only voting for candidates that are for stem cell research. Which I've learned may help with spinal injuries. I want you to know I have a large amount of respect for you and what your doing. I cant imagine the inner strength it must require. My best wishes to you.

I was at the Bears game yesterday, and saw on the big screen, an advertisment about you and Rocky, and felt horrible. I'm a junior at Highland Park High School in Cook County and used to play football until 8th grade. I was fortunate enough to never be seriously injured, but have many friends who have broken bones and torn muscles. With all my heart, I truely wish you and Rocky all the best of luck. God bless.

Hey Rob How are you? Found the site through your Ann. I hope you are staying strong. Remember that in the game it's not all about the body, it's in the heart. It's normal to feel like giving up, but just don't give in. I really beleive there is a reason for everything, with this I bet you have inspired millions to stay strong. I mean look at all these wonderful people that have written on your guess book. We all love you Rob, and one is all it takes but you've got more than that. Take Care.

I have no idea what is compelling me write to you but perhaps to tell you there is a reason you are with us. I had a gymnastics accident many years ago and the Dr. told my family that I would be a paralyzed from the neck down. A mircle happened...a misdiagnosis. It was a temporary condition but since I broke my 5th and 6th vertabrae, they needed to fuse it.
Anyway.....I wanted to share with you that you have sooooooo much to give. Without even knowing you I, as I said I felt compelled to write. Funny thing is...I stumblee across your web page. I am dating a man by the name of Henry Komosa and I use Komosa as a password to an account and your story popped up! Weird huh! I would love to hear from you. I know you will have to have someone write for you; however. Since I have worked with quadraplegics for years I know there is so much equipment available...Eyegazer etc....so people can type with their eyes. I know I probably can't help other than to be a pen pal but I am here and would love to talk with you. No doubt you are an angel and I would love to hear about your story if it is not to difficult for you to share.
Hugs,
Michele

Rob,
Stay courageous. Many people, even those you have never met and that you may never know, reach out to you with good wishes, prayers, donations and more. You and your family are undergoing much difficulty. My heart goes out to you. I'd like to offer a prayer right now for you. Heavenly Father, we cannot understand this situation but come to you with a request for peace that passes understanding. Peace that will fill Rob's heart and mind, plus that of his family, through Jesus's name we pray. Amen
It's not enough, just my words. Please accept my humble expression anyway.
Best regards,
Diane R.

Rob,
our prayers are with you. Your faith is a testament to Jesus, and is a gift to us. Thank you for your courage. Your view on life helps those around you to appreciate theirs, and this is a wonderful gift. Through Jesus, all things will be made new. I'm looking forward to throwing a football with you someday in heaven.

Dear Robert, I was very touched & brought to tears after seeing a segment about your accident on ABC Channel 7 last evening. Thank God for people like your mother who love unconditionally, & the folks at channel 7 & "Dreams for Kids" to care enough & try to make a difference. My prayers & good thoughts are with you. It would be a God-sent miracle if a cure for paralyses could ever be developed.
Sincerely, Ela Ambrogi-Ciborowski

Hello. I was watching the news yesterday and your story caught my attention. I had a friend who was in a serious car accident. But with the help of God she is better. I seen the icons and the crosses you had over you. I was wondering what religion you were if you dont mind me asking. It is very good how you are very optimistic and courageous, because with God everything is possible.

I remember seeing your story on the news in 1999. I'm glad that channel 7 news did an update the other day. I'm in a much different place that I was 5 years ago - and it's not really for the better. But as they say, "timing is everything". I am currently living a much different life (as you and your family are), and I am much more aware and in tune to the needs, grief depression and exhaustion the disable AND the caregiver experiences.
I'd like to stay in touch with you and your mom. For I am a mom too. I have a son who is an only child. So I can relate on many levels to what you may be going thru mentally (but very humbley don't profess to know what it's like to be in your shoes). In an 18 month time span, I lost my job, my husband lost his one month later and my son was already on unemployment that was about to run out! My husband found a job, I started my own business and things were looking up...until, I got a call from my husbands boss (who informed me that my husband had collapsed at work) and I needed to go to the hospital to be with him. My world changed that day, as I got to the hospital and found out he had a "stroke".
He is now home on disability. And our life as we knew it before is forever changed.
I'm now in a place where I can function again after 2 years of clinical depression. I now know why all this has happened. It is so I can reach out and help others who have also experienced "devisating life changes". There's always someone out there that has a greater burden to be tended to and that is why I am reacting to you, your story and your website.
We are planning to contribute to your fund, but I would like to know if there are any material, 3 dimensional things we can provide or help with.?
I'd like to stay in touch, becuase I'm a firm believer in "journalling" as a way to heal.
God bless you and your family.
And please know you are in my prayers.

Rob,
My wife and I watched the ABC 7 report last night and we both just wanted to let you and your family know that you are in our prayers. Last night truly put things in perspective for me. I realized that the things I complain about or the tough times I may go through are minor compared to the fight you've been waging for 5 years. Thank you for being an inspiration to me and to all of those who watched last night. I know it may not seem like it, but you are teaching people so much by displaying so much courage. Believe me when I say that your struggle is not in vain. Thank you for the lesson and good luck and God bless.
Sincerely,

My prayers go out to you and your family. I grew up in Chicago. My grandfather and uncle were both afflicted with polio. I do understand how hard this is on you. It is not an easy life. My uncle was 12 and the football captain when the polio paralyzed him from his waist down. The vaccine for polio came out a month later. My grandfather and uncle were very blessed to have full lives. My uncle now lives in Colorado and is very active with the Salvation Army. I will be making a donation to help your expenses. Have a good week.

I seen your web site on ABC7 and thought I would say hi and best of luck to you. I will be showing my 14 yr old son your website. He like football but has never played on a team yet. He will be graduating 8th grade this year. My son needs to see and/or spend time on volunteering hours for his CCD class that he goes to on weekends. Maybe he can do something for you & your family.
God be with you, Rob and God Bless your family.

I heard the newscaster the other night reminding us of your accident 5 years ago. I know how you get discourged about your health. I was diagnosed last year with Hodgkins Lymphoma (cancer of the lymph nodes) It changed my life. I thought I was going to die. I was in the lst stage of it. I had chemo for 6 months. During the 6 months I wanted to stop the chemo at different times. It was making me sick...and losing my hair...but my family and friends were there to keep up my spirits and keep me going. Am glad I hung in there...even though it was the most trying time of my life. Now I am encouraging you to do the same...one day at a time. That's all we have is one day at a time....Don't give up...If you feel like emailing ....am here!!! linda...cancer survivor....P.S. You are encouraging others with your life also.

Rob,
Good evening. My Name is Kevin Cohen and I just heard about your story on the ABC news tonight. Rob, I moved to Chicago about 4 years ago from St. Louis, MO where I grew up for the majority of my young adult life. I am a Cardinal, Ram, and Blues fan.. Not a chicago fan.. From your site I noticed that you are a Sox's fan.. My theory is I am a St Louis fan first and my next favorite team is whoever plays the Cubs.. I am sure that this makes you smile. My wife to be in July 05, family who is from the Southside are Sox's fans.. I am starting to take on the sox's as one of my favorite teams to watch.. Been to a few games.. Great food by the way at US Cell.. I currently work for a company by the name of CDW. CDW is a technology company in the Chicagoland area.. Our website is CDW.com if you would like to check it out. From what I heard on the news and from your great website you are looking for some help on donations.. Bye the way your mom is great and words can't describe her greatness it can only be admired. I would like to help you obtain some of the necessary items that you have requested on your website. I don't think I will be able to get all items but we will give it a shot. Rob, what would be some of the items from your list that would be most important to you?
Look forward to hearing from you soon!

I am praying for you and your Mom. My family and I remember when your accident happened. One of our son's was a football player for Warren High in Gurnee at the time. Our other son is on the Warren sophmore team now. It must be so very hard what you are enduring, but please don't give up hope. I will continue to pray and will also send a donation to help. Hi Rob -
Want you to know I'm thinking of you and your family and wish I could do something truly meaningful to help. I'm a marketing manager for a wine and spirits company and would be honored to provide you and your supporters wine and spirits to use for any upcoming fundraisers that might be planned. Please keep my email and my phone number (847/309-8283) and feel free to contact me for some products. It's not much, but trust me, one of the biggest expenses of a fundraiser is the booze - so get it free from me! God bless you and your mother! - Tracy B

Hey Rob,
I just read the article in the Daily Herald today about your story. I want you to know I have a similar story. I have a son who is now 13 months old who is on a ventilator and has a trach too. He spent 6 months at Children't Memorial Hosp. and his condition does not have a diagnosis. His diaphragm was paralyzed at birth and is getting stronger, but not enough to allow him to breathe on his own. WE struggle with a lot of the same things as you and your family- nursing is hell and it is hard to find nurses to cover his 18 hrs. a day of nursing and then to get good ones is the other challenge.
You can see our story and view pictures of our little miracle Nicholas at www.babynicholasc.netfirms.com. I'm glad to know I'm notthe only one who is having a hard time getting nursing. Your mom is an angel! I am doing a lot of the same things, since we don't have a lot of night nurses- I keep finding them sleeping on my couch!!!! Anyways,You look great and you are so blessed to have such wonderful family and friends just like Nicholas. God Bless you Rob.
Sincerely,
Jamie Coates

Rob,
Sorry to hear about your situation. Makes my protruding disk's in my neck and back, for which I have had one surgery on my neck so far, seem like a minor nuisance! I am 50 years old and have only lived in RM for about a year now so this is the first I've heard about you and that was in today's Herald, 10-6-04. I wish you the best, really. I am also a big Bears fan but I like the Cub's not the Sox, sorry! I enjoy talking about sports so if you have the need to chat about that, or other things please feel free to shoot me an e-mail. Unfortunately that is all I can offer to help with right now. I'd like to donate something in your quest for a new wheelchair, but my own situatuation makes it difficult at this time. Maybe in the near future. I'm looking forward to hearing from you and pass on my best wishes to your family! Chuck
